Morris Steinert, a Bavarian native who had immigrated to the United States founded M. Steinert & Sons in 1860. He possessed the skill for crafting and creating optical goods and was also proficient in the piano, organ and violin. Having music background led to a job in a music store in Savannah, Georgia which later gave headway for him when he opened his own music store in Athens, Georgia in 1860.

After moving his family to New York City when the Civil War started, he founded the Steinert Family Orchestra which later became the New Haven Symphony. By 1869, Steinway & Sons, world's premier piano makers granted his New Haven music store agency status. After his two sons joined him in the business, the company expanded quickly opening many music stores in cities in New England, Massachusetts and Rhode Island and also that included two piano factories.
