Mason & Hamlin Grand Pianos for sale
Henry Mason and Emmons Hamlin founded the Mason & Hamlin Company in Boston, Massachusetts, the birthplace of American piano design and manufacturing in 1854. Even though they had different backgrounds and interests, they shared a common goal; that is to make the world's finest musical instruments.
Henry Mason was a member of one of America’s oldest families and was an avid pianist. He had an extensive musical background. His brother, William was one of America's foremost classical pianists and composers. Lowell Mason, their father, was a famous composer and educator. Henry shared his father's lifelong dedication to music. Even though Emmons Hamlin was not a musician, he was a brilliant mechanic and inventor. Hamlin invented a way to voice organ reeds while working at the melodeon factory of George A. Price and Company of Buffalo. He later developed his discovery to perfection and when they formed their company, it was for the purpose of manufacturing a new musical instrument that they called the "organ harmonium."
Having won many prizes and having topped the much larger and more established European competitors, Mason & Hamlin astounded the world and as a result, established a worldwide reputation for excellence. Mason & Hamlin decided to branch out into making pianos in 1881. The pianos are built using only the finest materials, and very slowly and meticulously, with great attention given to even the smallest detail, just like following the traditions established in the making of its organs. Mason & Hamlin also hired exceptionally brilliant designers and among them was the talented Richard W. Gertz. He contributed many innovations such as the 'Duplex Scale', 'screw stringer' and the 'Tension Resonator'. Mason & Hamlin's pianos are considered to be among the world's finest.
