Koichi Kawai who was an inventive genius during his time was the founder of Kawai pianos. Not only did he possess the extraordinary talent for design and innovation, he also led the research and development team which introduced pianos to Japan. He later became the first in Japan to design and build a complete piano action which resulted in him receiving many patents for his designs and inventions.
In the 1920s, Koichi decided to build a dream of his own, when the Japanese piano industry began to falter. So, his quest began in 1927 as he and seven kindred colleagues formed the Kawai Musical Instrument Research Laboratory in Hamamatsu, Japan. The eight of them had a dream to build the world's finest piano together.
After Koichi Kawai died a sudden death in October of 1955 at the age of 70, his son, 33 year old Shigeru Kawai succeeded him at the helm. He opened the Ryuyo Grand Piano Facility in 1980 and this facility embodies the perfect "marriage" of hand-craftsmanship and advanced technology. Shigeru's son, Hirotaka Kawai took over the family company in 1989 and strengthened the Kawai name with the establishment of the Karawan facility.
Kawai pianos are created only using quality materials and with elegant finishes making them world renowned. The superb tone is the hallmark of every Kawai piano. The soundboard, being the heart of a piano's tone, is tested using state-of-the-art equipment to ensure its quality. Also, instead of using wood for action parts, Kawai uses ABS Styran, a much stronger, more stable material that solved many of the problems associated with wood (most notably, shrinking and swelling) to ensure the fine workings of an action.
It is with the perfect "marriage" of advanced technology and hand-craftsmanship, Kawai has been able to create and produce world class pianos. As Shigeru Kawai said, "Making Kawai the sound heard around the world was our vision, but making Kawai the sound preferred around the world is our ultimate goal."
