Carl Bechstein founded C. Bechstein pianos during the Romantic Period in 1853 in Berlin, Germany. They are hand-crafted in Germany and are generally regarded as the premier piano of the world. Illustrious pianists such as Franz Liszt, Claude Debussy, Hans von Bülow, Arthur Schnabel, Krzysztof Penderecki, Witold Lutoslawski, and Leonard Bernstein chose Bechstein pianos. They are also often found in great music institutions, and are priced in the upper range; new verticals generally start at about $17,000 and Grands start at about $40,000.
C. Bechstein pianos are manufactured using large amounts of natural materials. Strict quality standards are extremely important and if the quality is not met, the parts are being replaced with ones of better quality. Only the best materials are considered to be good enough for C. Bechstein. Each type of wood is used in accordance to its function and is selected on the basis of important criteria for stability, durability and sound. Veneers are joined together sheet by sheet, and are available in Alder, Beech, Cherry, Mahogany, Walnut, Oak, and more. They are laminated to the cabinet core board in layers of 0.7mm thick. These pianos are designed with a sound-supporting effect in mind. A very special wood membrane is used to produce the C. Bechstein resonance body system, which is integral in producing pianos of the highest standard. The C. Bechstein vertical pianos additionally have what are known as sound board corner resonators. They optimize the timbre and the volume of the sound. Solid pieces of wood are laminated together and are later 'sealed' in a special process of veneers to produce the Grand Lid. The engineering of the C. Bechstein pianos is considered to be sensational and there is no compromising in producing each piano.
