Steinway pianos are built one at a time with great care and the skills required to do so were handed down from master to apprentice. Steinway's rim and cases are fitted, glued and maple doweled. Sitka spruce is used in the making of the Steinway's diaphragmatic soundboard. The hammers are cut from virgin wool felt and contain no admixture of other materials.

Bosendorfer pianos are generally made with beech, spruce, or maple. Depending on the type of wood and plank size, the wood is seasoned outdoors for up to 5 years and a further 12 - 15 weeks in the drying room.
